I was asked to quote a prospective client today for an upgrade from Sage Instant Accounts to the latest version 25 of Sage 50c Essentials today. This led me to an interesting discovery ...

I called Sage and was told that this client was paying for Sage Cover Extra which means they were entitled to download and install the latest Version 25 of Sage 50 Accounts Essentials already.

"They were entitled to the software as
part of the cover!"

Sage Instant Accounts was discontinued in 2016, so this Sage user has been paying for software for two years which they have not used.

It is down to the user to download and upgrade to the latest version of Sage software if you pay for Sage Cover Extra, so do double check your own Sage subscription and make sure you are using the latest version of the software which you are entitled to.

It doesn't make a massive difference at the moment, except that if you are paying for cover you don't use for software you are not installing then you are wasting your money.

When Making Tax Digital comes in it, will be more important to keep your software fully up to date as only the latest versions will be compliant with the HMRC rules of the moment.

You also have the option of purchasing a software-only subscription through Silicon Bullet, and then just paying for support from us as and when you need it instead of paying for cover you never actually use.

As a comparison for pricing, Sage 50c Essentials software license is £20 per month plus VAT. A Xero subscription with comparable functionality is £22 per month plus VAT.

"Would you like to know more?"

If you're unsure whether you're using the latest version of Sage then do check out the Help>About page and do give me a call on 01604 420057 or click here to ping me an email and let's see how I can help you.

Until next time ...
