However, this transition brought with it some unwelcome news for small businesses running payroll for multiple employees. Under the new structure, any business with more than one employee would be compelled to migrate to the considerably more expensive Comprehensive plan.

Initially, this change struck a sour note within the accounting community. Many clients of Xero felt that the steep price increase, only necessary due to the addition of a single employee, was disheartening and counterproductive to the goals of small business viability and growth. Critically, while existing clients were granted a reprieve from the impending price hikes until 2025, the anxiety surrounding future costs was palpable.
Fortunately, Xero has been attentive to this feedback and has devised a more accommodating solution. They recognise the need for flexibility within their offerings, particularly for businesses that may not yet require the full-fledged features of the Comprehensive Plan, but nevertheless wish to add employees.
Effective from a future date yet to be announced, Xero will allow subscribers on any plan to add additional employees for a nominal fee of £1.50 per employee. The Ultimate plan will remain slightly different, offering an addition for just £1. This enhancement is a welcome reprieve, affording clients the ability to adapt and grow their workforce as needed without the fear of immediate escalations in subscription costs.
This pivotal change acknowledges the challenges faced by smaller enterprises striving to scale operations while managing financial constraints. With the additional flexibility provided by Xero, businesses can now make staffing decisions based on actual needs rather than a fear of crossing a threshold into a heftier pricing structure.
