Small businesses can look forward to Xero's upcoming CATO replacement, streamlining their accounting processes

For many small company owners, the upcoming CATO replacement is less about change for change's sake and more about keeping a familiar task manageable. Xero is preparing a new filing option for the smallest UK limited companies, particularly those that have historically handled their own returns and want a straightforward path forward.

The timing matters because HMRC's old Company
Accounts and Tax Online service is closing!

This Xero update is designed to bridge that gap for micro-entities with simple tax affairs, so they can continue working in a way that feels practical rather than complicated. At its heart, the CATO replacement features are built for simplicity.

They are aimed at owners who already know their numbers, keep clean records, and only need a sensible route to file accounts and Corporation Tax without unnecessary layers of process.

That said, Xero is clear about who this is for and who it is not for. The service will not sit within partner-billed organisations, and businesses with more moving parts will be encouraged to seek help from an accountant or bookkeeper rather than trying to squeeze complex needs into a basic filing flow.

This is where the broader accounting software
changes start to make sense!

Some businesses will always prefer to stay hands-on, but many will reach a point where expert support saves time, reduces risk, and makes decisions easier. Xero's view is that the right support at the right moment matters more than forcing everyone into the same setup.

For advisers, the picture is moving forward too. In time, Xero plans to offer a more comprehensive Corporation Tax experience for accountants and bookkeepers, with the level of control and depth they expect. Until then, accounts production remains available in Xero Bookkeeping, so there is still a working option in place.

What stands out is the balance in the approach. The CATO replacement gives the smallest self-filing companies a path to keep going, while Xero continues to point growing businesses towards professional support through channels like the Advisor Directory.

In other words, the CATO replacement is not just a tool update; it is part of a wider shift in how small businesses are guided as their needs evolve.

For anyone watching the CATO replacement closely, the message is fairly simple: the next step is coming, and it is being shaped around real-world use rather than empty novelty.

That is usually the most useful kind of software change.

Until next time ...
