What happens if you miss the deadline? |

If you call HMRC today then you are likely to hear a message telling you they are struggling with the volume of companies trying to register for Making Tax Digital ...
What do you do if you can't register for Making Tax Digital before the deadline?
Companies whose first compliant VAT quarter is April to June are due to submit their first return by 7th August. HMRC suggested you should register with them at least two weeks before the payment is due around the 11th of August.
"HMRC's systems are not coping!"
I have heard from other bookkeepers that they have had to put a hold on new registrations as HMRC's systems can't cope and you should, if you haven't registered already, just submit your VAT return in the old fashioned way.
Do join my Better Bookkeeping Support group on Facebook where you can join in with the hive mind of bookkeepers who gather there and share information and support each other. Let me know what HMRC have said to you and if you have been successful in submitting your Making Tax Digital tax return.
Anecdotally, I have heard that no fines will be issued for this quarter if you are late in being compliant, but the HMRC helpline still says you may actually receive one, so please don't quote me!
