If you've recently discovered that the first Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax quarterly submission deadline has passed, don't panic. The first deadline, August 7, has passed, but there are currently no late-filing penalties for businesses that miss this initial quarterly update ...

MTD For Self Assessment: Don't worry if you missed the first deadline, there's still time to file your taxes digitally

MTD For Self Assessment: Don't worry if you missed the first deadline, there's still time to file your taxes digitally

Making Tax Digital is one of the biggest changes to the UK tax system in years. Instead of completing one annual Self Assessment tax return using a year's worth of paperwork, eligible self-employed individuals and landlords will eventually submit quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software.

The aim is to make tax reporting more accurate, reduce errors
and help people understand their tax position!

If your records aren't quite where they should be, now is the perfect time to get organised. Gather your invoices, receipts, and bank statements, make sure everything has been recorded correctly, and identify any gaps while they're still relatively easy to fix.

The sooner you establish a regular bookkeeping routine, the less stressful each quarterly submission will become.

Remember, the next quarterly update is only about three months away. Rather than leaving everything until the last minute again, use this breathing room to get ahead. Spending a little time each week keeping your accounts up to date is far easier than trying to reconstruct months of transactions in one sitting.

Good bookkeeping also gives you a much clearer
picture of how your business is performing!

If you're unsure whether Making Tax Digital applies to you or you're struggling to understand what needs to be submitted, don't be afraid to ask for professional advice. A bookkeeper can help you choose the right software, keep your records accurate, and make sure you're ready for future deadlines.

Missing the first submission doesn't have to define the rest of the year. Take advantage of the current grace period, get your accounts in order, and you'll be in a much stronger position for the next quarterly update and beyond.

Until next time ...
