A new Sage 50 Accounts update is coming, with version 34.1 introducing changes to align the software with current UK and Irish requirements. For businesses, accountants and bookkeepers, one of the update's most important areas concerns Making Tax Digital for Income Tax ...

Sage 50 Accounts update introduces crucial changes for making tax digital compliance

Sage 50 Accounts update introduces crucial changes for making tax digital compliance

From April 2026, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies to qualifying sole traders and landlords with gross income above £50,000. Those within the rules must keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC.

Sage 50 Accounts v34.1 includes an important
improvement to this process!

Quarterly updates submitted through the software will now correctly trigger HMRC's tax calculation process. This means users should subsequently be able to see their estimated tax calculation through HMRC's online services.

For anyone affected by Making Tax Digital, this should help create a more joined-up process between maintaining records, submitting the required information, and understanding the potential tax position.

The Sage 50 Accounts update also contains compliance changes for businesses operating in Ireland. These include updates to Return of Trading Details reporting in line with Revenue requirements, revised VAT settings for newly created Irish companies and other improvements intended to reduce the amount of manual configuration required.

As with any accounting software update, businesses should
ensure they understand what is changing!

It is particularly important for sole traders and landlords approaching Making Tax Digital requirements to ensure their records and software are ready rather than leaving preparations until reporting deadlines arrive. The full release notes for version 34.1 are expected separately and will provide more detail about the changes included.

Keeping accounting software up to date isn't simply about having the latest version. Regulatory changes increasingly depend upon digital systems communicating correctly with HMRC and other authorities, making software updates an important part of maintaining accurate and compliant records.

If you're unsure whether the Sage 50 Accounts update or Making Tax Digital for Income Tax affects you, I can offer you a handholding session so you can make any necessary changes in good time.

Until next time ...
