Getting your sole trader clients ready for MTD For Income Tax
If you're a bookkeeper supporting sole trader clients, you've likely already started receiving questions about Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax. While the changes may seem daunting at first, they're really about encouraging better record-keeping and regular reporting ... Prepare your sole trader clients for the upcoming changes of MTD For Income Tax By helping clients prepare now, you can make the transition much smoother and avoid a last-minute rush before the first filing deadlines arrive. The changes are being introduced in stages, so not every sole trader will be affected immediately. Here's the current timetable:
Although some clients may have a little more time, now is the ideal opportunity to begin preparing them for the new way of working. Waiting until they're required to comply could make the transition far more stressful than it needs to be. Under MTD for Income Tax, clients will need to keep digital records using compatible software and submit quarterly updates to HMRC throughout the tax year. At the end of the year, they'll complete a Final Declaration, replacing the current annual Self Assessment process.
